Personality:

From the time the series starts to the time it ends, Daenerys' personality does a complete 180. Or maybe it was the calm before the storm, one of her nicknames being Daenerys Stormborn.

In the beginning she is shy, meek, and unable to stand up for herself. She believes what she is told and is loyal to her brother no matter how badly he treats her. She had the innocence and loyalty of a young child, at first not minding that she was being traded for an army, but while she is innocent she is also very intelligent. But, her soft spoken and polite nature often kept her from speaking her mind. Daenerys is compassionate and cares deeply about people, she does not like to see anyone injured, she truly is a mothering character.

She is wed to Khal Drogo and becomes Khaleesi. Drogo is, what Westerners may call, a savage, seemingly the opposite of the peace desiring Daenerys. He is a warrior and has no problems mounting his prized wife. This really makes Daenerys withdraw, she is afraid and protective, but knows that she does not want to be treated like an object. It takes a conversation with Doreah on how to please her husband that really springboards her change in personality, or the revelation of her true one.

After standing up to Drogo, by controlling how they have sex, he begins to respect her. It's with his approval that she really begins to respect herself as well. They are equals, and with that comes a power she was never allowed to have before. As her confidence grew she began to take crap from no one, especially her brother. She is powerful and cannot be controlled, no matter how much he would refuse to believe that. But then again, she's the one with the army behind her.

Daenerys is a very determined person, often to the point where she becomes defiant. But she is the one who ate the whole of the raw stallion heart, and it is she who is the true dragon born, her determination and power behind her words is not unfounded. Even after falling in love with him she is often appalled at the the things Drogo and the Dothraki's do, namely pillage and rape. She takes all the women for herself and promises them better treatment, she still stands for peace no matter how much she has assimilated into the Dothraki culture, again taking up the mother role. Oddly enough, she allows herself to be sad for others but not for herself. When her son is stillborn and Drogo becomes an empty shell she does not seem to allow herself to be upset. While she does feel pain she channels that energy into determination.

She obtains a precarious balance between demanding respect and vying for peace. She is prideful and commanding, even when Drogo dies and the Dothraki leave her, she did not sit down and cry, she rose from the ashes of Drogo's pyre, completing the change from a meek girl to a determined woman.
